Barrio de Santa Cruz, Seville
(a photo by PhillipC)

There is a charming labyrinth of narrow streets and small flower-decked squares right next to the Cathedral, on its eastern side. Barrio de Santa Cruz was the Jewish quarter (Juderia) of Seville from 1248 when the city was conquered from the Moors to 1492 when the Jews were expelled from Spain. Approximately 400 families lived in this created by them commune with their own justice and synagogue, although they were paying taxes to the crown. Today, Santa Cruz has dramatically changed. A desired living quarter from the 17th century it has preserved its attractiveness until present day, being additionally prettified because of the tourists.

A walk in the quarter will be a very pleasant experience. You will pass by traditional Sevillian houses, strewn with flowers, especially along Callejon del Agua. Go to the district’s central square Plaza de Santa Cruz where was the main synagogue, later turned into a church and eventually destroyed by the troops of Napoleon. The impressive Hospital de los Venerables is situated between the Cathedral and this square. It was a home of priests. Its church contains some splendid frescoes by Jean de Valdes Leal and his son Lukas. Today the structure is possessed by the private foundation for culture Focus and various concerts and exhibitions are organized in it.
